However, the subscription appears to have succeeded.

thanks, found this bug:
turns out there is a conflict twixt Apache's mod_rewrite and PHP's urlencode()
one solution was to change the code to do this urlencode(urlencode('blah')) but I just couldn't do that!
so, any servers with pretty URLs will need to ensure they have the Apache server config flag set (see the README) -- that's the proper fix
